PROGRAMS

 

The English as a Second Language (ESL)

component is designed to teach students whose primary language is not English to  speak, read, and write English. It provides the clients with an avenue to begin  becoming self sufficient.

The Adult Basic Education (ABE)

component offers courses in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics. Students who score 6.9 or below, on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), are enrolled in skill classes.  After satisfactory completing their skill classes students are awarded an Adult Basic Education Certificate which certifies that they have completed the academic requirements for the eighth grade level.

The Genera1 Education Development (GED)

component of our program provides assistance to students needing preparation for the GED Test. In order to enter the classes, students must score a 7.0 or better on the TABE. Students who have taken and successfully passed the GED and Pre-GED examinations will be awarded academic credentials equivalent to the high school diploma.

 The Adult Secondary Education (ASE)

component is similar to the regular high school. Classes are held four evenings per week.. Students entering from an accredited school  will be placed accordingly. All others must score an 8.0 Of higher on the TABE to enter the ninth grade. At the completion of the  program, students will receive their high school diploma.

SERVICES

Counseling

Counseling services are available to assist adult learners in the areas of class scheduling. life and career choices, and crisis situations.

Testing

The Test of Adult Basic Education {TABE) is administered weekly. Persons interested in participating in the Adult Education program: are required to take this test. 

Pre-GED & GED

The Pre-GED and GED Exams are administered bimonthly. Applications for the exams are available at

  •      the Adult Education Center in Princesse
  •      Florence A.S. Williams Public Library  in Christiansted, 
  •      Althalie McFar1ane Petersen Publ1c Library in Frederiksted

 College Services

assistance in completing college  Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), the American College Tests (ACT) and financial aid applications are provided through our counse1or's office.

 Procedure

Obtain your Basic Education Certificate, Genera! Education Diploma, High School Diploma, as well as learn English as a Second Language (ESL).

Register for day c!asses Monday thru Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm at the Theodora Dunbavin School, or at the St. Croix Educa1ional Comp1exfrom 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Before enrolling, you are required to do the following:

 Requirements:

  • 16 years or older and not enrolled in the regu1ar public or non-public school system. Proof of withdrawal may be requested
  •  Social Security Card, citizenship or Permanent Residence
  •  Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) -This test may be optional for students in the Adult Secondary Education (ASE) program.
  • Registration fee (must be paid in the form of a money order.)
