PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The mission
of the professional development unit is to prepare and support educators to
help all students achieve high standards.
It is recognized that sound professional development enables teachers
to develop further expertise in subject content, teaching strategies, uses
of technologies, and other essential elements of teaching and learning.The
growth and development activities will ultimately be judged on the basis of
the impact on teacher effectiveness and student learning.
The assessment of the activities will inform and guide our practice
and will also guide additional professional development.
1. To focus on teachers as central to student learning while including all members of the education community.
2. To focus on individual, collegial and organizational improvement through professional development.
3. To facilitate, while coordinating with specific area coordinators and program leaders, professional development sessions that address the training needs of administrative, instructional and support staff.
4. To coordinate the workshops offerings for the Division of Curriculum, Assessment & Technology.
5. To support the distance learning initiative of the Division of Curriculum, Assessment & Technology.
6. To serve as co-editor of the Division’s Newsletter (Curriculum News and Views)
7. To arrange for training and provide support to strengthen grant-writing skills of educators in the District.
8. To conduct a minimum of three training sessions on topics related to those identified in the annual Strategic Planning for Educational Collaboration and Improving Administrative Leadership (SPECIAL) Conference held during the Spring.
9. To offer, in cooperation with the computer training specialist, a minimum of two workshops related to the use of the Office Suite programs for professional/support staff.
10. To support, in collaboration with the Division of Special Education, components of a Comprehensive System of Personnel Development (CSPD).
11. To support the Professional Development School Activities (PDS).
12. To support the Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration (CSRD) Projects
13. To work on the Curriculum Enhancement Task Force and to support professional development activities related to this initiative.
14. To serve on the StateWide Action Team (SWAT) of the Regional Alliance for Math and Science Education Reform and to provide guidance and advice regarding professional development activities that evolve from the relationship with the umbrella agency.
15. To provide support to professional development activities which may be initiated by individual teachers, schools, units, groups or agencies
