MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT : Students must successfully complete three (3) credits to meet graduation requirements, as prescribed by the V.I. Board of Education. These three required math classes are Algebra I, Algebra 11, and Geometry.

Algebra I :

Grade level - 9 th Grade
Prerequisite - None. This is an entry-level course.
Length - One school year
Credit - 1 credit.

The purpose of this course is to provide the foundation for more advanced mathematics courses, and to develop the skills needed to solve mathematical problems. Topics shall include, but are not limited to, the properties of the real number system, the use of variables, solving equations and inequalities, developing and solving formulas, solving linear and quadratic equations, integral and fractional exponents. Additionally, students will be introduced to some early statistics and some geometry applications as a means to exemplify the algebra of equations.

Accelerated Algebra I :

Grade Level – 9 th Grade (1 st semester)
Prerequisite – (1) A recommendation from the Junior High School
(2) A grade of 80% or better on the placement Test.
Length – One semester
Credits – 1 credit

Students who enroll in this class are usually those intending to take the AP Calculus exam during their senior year. Topics studied in this class are those of Algebra I, but done at a faster pace. The teacher of this class may choose to add any additional topic as he/she sees fit, and/or time permits.

Computer Science :

Grade level -10 th to 12 th grade
Prerequisite - Credits in Algebra I and Data processing

This course introduces students to the study of the personal computer I its components and its many uses. Students also learn keyboard operation, data processing, spreadsheet operations, and data base operations. Additionally students will learn algorithms and flow charts, basic computer languages and graphics on the computer.

Algebra II:

Grade Level- 10 th grade
Prerequisite -1 credit in Algebra I
Length- 1 semester

This course reviews the basic concepts of Algebra such as the operations of real numbers, solving equations with one variable, rewriting word problems into algebraic symbols, working with absolute values, proving mathematical theorems, linear equations and functions, products and factors of polynomials, and both rational and irrational expressions. The course asks that students develop and provide further explanation, synthesis, experimentation or extensions of the concepts learned in Algebra I.

Accelerated Algebra II :

Grade level -9 th Grade (2 nd semester)
Prerequisite -1 credit in Accelerated Algebra I with a grade of 80% or better
Length -1 semester
Credits -1 credit

The purpose of this course is to study the topics of Algebra in depth, and at a faster pace. Emphasis is placed on theory, proof and the development of formulas and their applications. Additional topics include logarithms, complex numbers, and probability. The use of a graphic calculator is strongly recommended.

Geometry :

Grade level- 11 th Grade
Prerequisite- 1 credit in Algebra II
Length -1 semester

The purpose of this course is to emphasize the critical thinking process, and to develop deductive reasoning as a method to solving mathematical situations. The course begins with the language and logic of geometry. Additional topics include the study of points, lines, angles, planes, triangles, quadrilaterals, and direct and indirect proofs. Topics such as polygons, congruent and similar figures, the Pythagorean Theorem, special right triangles and areas and volumes of two and three dimensional figures should also be covered.

Accelerated Geometry :

Grade Level- 10 th grade (1 st semester)
Prerequisite -1 credit in Accelerated Algebra II

This course covers all the topics of the regular Geometry class, but it is done at a faster pace. Additional topics include the study of circle and spheres, construction, coordinate geometry, and transformational geometry. Students will also learn the use of the trigonometric function as a means to solving real life geometric situations.

Trigonometry :

Grade Level -10 th Grade to 12 th Grade
Prerequisite -satisfactory completion of graduation requirements

The purpose of this course is to study circular and trigonometric functions, their development and their applications. Topics shall include, but are not limited to, circular functions, trigonometric identities, graphs of the trigonometric functions and their shifts, and solving right and oblique triangles for general and particular solutions. Additional topics will include the study of vectors, matrices, complex numbers, and finite numbers.

Pre-Calculus :

Grade level- 11 th Grade to 12 th Grade
Prerequisite - satisfactory completion of the graduation requirements.

This course exposes the student to the study of the Algebra of functions, introduction to differential calculus, the application of differential calculus to problem solving, and logarithmic and exponential functions.

Calculus :

Grade level - 11 th or 12 th grade
Prerequisite - 1 credit in Pre-Calculus

Calculus is the mathematics of change and motion, of limits and area. In this course students will study functions from an analytical, graphical, and a numerical point of view. Similarly, the concepts of Calculus (limits, derivatives, and integrals) are studied from these vantage points. A TI-89 is required for this class

Advanced Placement Calculus AB :

Grade level - 12 th Grade
Prerequisite - 1 credit in Calculus with a teacher's recommendation, and parental consent.
Length - 1 school year
Credits - 1 credit with a weighted grade.

The purpose of this course is to provide students with a study of elementary functionsl and the general theory and techniques of Calculus, as outlined by The College Board.1 Upon completion of this course, all students shall take the Advanced Placement examination, in late May. The course will end with students conducting a mathematics seminar. The TI-89 Graphic calculator is used throughout this course. Students may sign one out from the school, and return it at the end of the school year.

A student will be classified as an eleventh grader if he has accumulated a total of 12 student credits with an overall average of 70% or better. If he has not passed one of the required ninth, tenth, or eleventh grade courses he will be called a twelfth grader with a deficiency. If he fails a required course he must repeat it before graduation.

All students must have a minimum of 26 credits and an overall average of at least 70% to graduate. One credit is given for the successful completion of a course. ( See course descriptions on page 36 ) Courses need to be taken in the following areas:

General Science :

Prerequisite- None. This is an entry-level course.

Introduction to the history, philosophy, methodology and content of the metric system, earth science, chemistry, astronomy and physics. Students gain experience through the investigation of scientific processes.

Biology I :

Grade level -10th grade

This course is an introduction to the scientific study of basic life processes of plants and animal extending from the cell to the larger work biome. Emphasis is placed on the physiology of man, laboratory exercises, field trips and independent research. Some emphasis is placed on the classification of plants and animals.

Marine Biology I :

This course is an introduction into and a critical examination of identification, classification and physiology of plants and animals in the marine environment-stressing organisms in the Caribbean Sea. Major emphasis is placed on: numerous field trips, guest speakers, and laboratory exercises.

Biology II :

There is strong preparation for those who may decide to specialize in science. Students explore the fundamentals of physiology through laboratory exercises, dissection, independent research and student investigation.

Biology III :

An advanced course in human physiology. Preparation for those who may decide to specialize in medical or health related fields. Emphasis is placed on microscopic structures of body systems as related to anatomy and physiology sections of the text.

Marine Biology II :

This is an advanced course of identification, classification and physiology of plants and animals in the marine environment in the Caribbean Sea. Major emphasis is placed on numerous field trips, guest speakers, swimming qualification screening, and proficiency with self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA).

Chemistry I :

Grade level- 10th -12th (required)
Prerequisite- Biology I, Algebra

Fundamental principles and concepts of chemistry are presented from an atomic and molecular standpoint with illustrative examples from descriptive chemistry .Designed to develop students' analytical skills and their application to abstract concepts through individual and/or group laboratory explorations.

Environmental Science :

This is an advanced, course in environmental research. It is preparation for those exceptional students who may pursue a career in oceanography research. Emphasis is placed on the marine environment and coastal areas. This course is intended to encourage interest in marine industries.

Physics :

This is an advanced course in which mathematics is applied to physics concepts. It includes exploration of mechanics, and modern innovative trends in physics. Experience is acquired through laboratory experiments designed to develop students' analytical and manipulative skills.

Botany :

A course of identification, classification, and physiology of terrestrial plant life. Experience is acquired through field trips, guest speakers, and laboratory exploration on inbreeding, out breeding, mass production, and study of medicinal and poisonous plants.

Virgin Islands History :

This course deals with the United States Virgin Islands from discovery to the transfer of the islands to the United States. The second nine weeks examines the islands under the Navy and civilian government, and Virgin Islands personalities.

The course will investigate Africa as the seat of civilization, the geographic conditions which exist on the continent, analyze cultural patterns found in Africa's traditional societies, and an examination of Africa's recent history I covering the period of European contact to independence. Also included is a survey of African people in the Diaspora and their contributions to the United States and the World.

The historical and political background of Democracy as a form of government as compared with others. Emphasis on current problems that America faces in the domestic realm.

World Geography :

Students survey the development of landforms and water bodies, the earths place in the universe, and the interrelationship of humans and their environment.

Advanced Placement History :

Some major topics and sub-topics in an overview from colonial times to Reconstruction, with an intensive examination of the U.S. as a world power, World War I and I" the political and economic aspects of the Cold Wars, international and domestic achievements from the Korean War to the present. The course also has a substantial writing requirement and a standardized exam is administered.

Psychology :

Grade level -11th or 12th grade

Students will learn how studies such as philosophy, the natural sciences, and medicine contributed to the development of psychology. Examine and discuss patterns of behavior, the characteristics and causes of mental disorders, and the processes of group dynamics.

Street Law :

An examination of the American legal system as the foundation for American society where students examine laws, which have an impact or personal liberty, fundamental civil and criminal justice procedure ability to function in the judicial system of the U.S., and V.I. For students whose test and past grades indicate that they are capable of pursuing independent study activities and are reading on or above grade level. It concentrates study of parts of speech; identification and usage, letter, paragraph and composition writing. Literature includes the short story, poetry, and the novel, and dictionary usage. Activities include independent reading; writing reports, and original writing.

English 10 :

This course stresses a study of the following literary genre: the short story , poetry , and biography. Additionally, there is a review of grammar with emphasis on usage. Writing assignments include narrative and descriptive paragraphs, compositions and letter writing, critical reviews, persuasive writing, and research writing.

English 10 (Accelerated) :

Review of grammar with concentration on writing paragraphs, reports, compositions, and at least one library reference paper. Literature includes the short, poetry, drama and the novel. Activities: Independent reading, oral presentations, creative original writing, and dramatic presentation.

This course focuses on American Literature from the 17th through the 19th century . Designed as a literature-based writing course, English 11 integrates, reinforces. utilizes and demonstrates all aspects of standard language communication. Emphasis is given to students' writing styles and the production of a unified and coherent five-paragraph essay. Additionally, PSAT strategies and vocabulary building exercises, business letter writing, and a short research or term paper are required.

English 11 (Accelerated) :

This course focuses on the improvement of students' writing style with an emphasis on the organization of the unified and coherent composition, analysis of various forms of literature through a study of the development of American Literature, media analysis, and the short research paper.

The course focuses on a chronological study of English Literature from the Anglo- Saxon Period to the Elizabethan Age (17th century). SAT practice and other college preparatory exercises are done. Language-life skills and job writing skills are covered also. Argumentative essay writings culminate into an argumentative research paper. Job related and college preparatory writing skills activities continue.

English 12 (Accelerated) :

The purpose of this course is the development of reading skills for students reading slightly below their grade level. Students will develop vocabulary, comprehension, and study/learning skills. The development of reading as a recreational activity will be emphasized.

Journalism I :

The purpose of this course is to provide instruction in basic aspects of journalism and workshop experiences in journalistic production. The content should include instruction in recognizing and writing news for journalistic media and in developing editorials, sports articles and feature stories. In addition to written work, students will receive instruction in the history and traditions of journalism as well as workshop experiences in photography, layouts, advertising, printing, and other practical aspects of journalistic enterprise. In connection with workshop experiences, one or more student journalistic products may be published.

Journalism II – Newspaper & Yearbook :

These courses provide practical experience in successful newsgathering techniques, practice in journalism. The content includes frequent practice in gathering information and in writing news, sports, feature articles, and editorials. Organization and management techniques relating to journalistic productions, including leadership skills, record keeping, time management, utilization of personnel, and task organization, is stressed. These classes publish the school's newspaper.

Journalism III -- Radio Broadcasting :

To introduce high school students to various careers available in the radio broadcast industry and ultimately to prepare them to work and hold positions in the local radio industry through the teaching of radio broadcast theory and providing them with hands on experience so that they become trained in the practice aspect. Learning how to operate a control board by actually working with announcers at local stations.

Speech I:

This course provides instruction in the fundamentals of formal and informal oral communication. The major instructional areas include skills and forms of oral communication, techniques of group discussion, techniques of effective listening, analysis of audience, and techniques of public speaking. Meets requirements as an elective and performing arts credit for Florida Academic Scholars Program.

Drama I :

This course provides in-depth experiences in the study and practice of theatre arts and literature. The content includes an overview of the history of the theatre and literature of the theatre production including scenery construction, costuming, lighting, and make- up. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of acting. This course satisfies the performing arts requirements.

Communication Skills :

This course is designed to introduce the student to the arts of written and oral communication. Emphasis is placed on building confidence, competence, and articulation in public speaking through effective speech preparation and presentation to include original/non-original oratory, readers' theatre and debate techniques.

This course is considered an essential elective for college preparatory student. Students develop their writing, organizational, and research abilities through a detailed study of all major forms of composition.

This course introduces students to African and African-American literature through selections in all genres by outstanding authors. Emphasis is placed on critical analysis and interpretation.

Caribbean Literature :

This course is a survey course involving the study and analysis of major West Indian authors. Of particular interest will be the appreciation of Virgin Islands authors through guest appearances and workshops.

Spanish I EMT :

For the student who is not a native speaker, this course provides an introduction to the language and culture of the Spanish Speaking world. The course emphasizes fundamental language concepts and listening comprehension. Audio-visual materials are employed to facilitate instruction.

Spanish II EMT :

This course is designed to further improve the students' knowledge of both spoken and written Spanish through intensive oral practice and emphasis on the more complex structures necessary for personal communication and appreciation of the Hispanic culture will be the pedagogical focus on the course.

This course is designed to further improve the student's proficiency in knowledge of the Spanish language. This course is intended for college bound students. The pedagogical focus of the course will be on the syntax of the language, oral proficiency, introduction to Spanish literature, and further exploration of the Hispanic culture. The purpose of this course is to provide a review of fundamental grammar and culture for students who speak Spanish as a native language, focusing on oral and written communication free from English interference. The different cultures of the Spanish-speaking countries should be studied.

Spanish II SMT :

This course is for Spanish speaking individuals. It reinforces the development of oral and written communication and the study of the lives and contributions of well-known twentieth century Spanish and Hispanic American historical figures, writers, artists, and musicians as reflected in letters, speeches, and biographies. Included in this course is practice and natural phenomena, as well as in, memorizing facts and ideas. The cultural focus will be on Puerto Rico, Central, and South America.

Spanish III SMT:

This course emphasizes the basic principles of communication through an analysis of different types of media, including library research, data gathering, and the writing of news articles. The course progresses into the study of selected literary works such as prose and poetry as a basis for growth in interpretive skills and vocabulary, with analysis focusing on words of Greek and Latin origin. Research papers, special projects, and oral reports are required.

French I :

Grade level - 9th grade

This course is an introduction to the French language and culture. The elements of basic grammar will be studied. It includes the conjugation of the most common regular and irregular verbs in the present and "passé compose" tenses. Students are expected to acquire a vocabulary of about 1000 words including greetings, to give basic commands and to tell time. Aspects of Francophone geography and culture will also be explored. French club participation is expected.

French II :

This course gives a review of grammar, introduces the past, future, conditional and composite tenses. Also includes poetry, geography, history and prose of France and the French Caribbean. This course uses the aural-oral method with the aids of slides, films, and recordings.

Includes an advanced comprehensive review of French grammar and construction. Much emphasis is on idiomatic expressions and technical vocabularies. Contemporary literature and the work of well-acclaimed artists are studied. A term paper written in French is required.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT: Students must successfully complete three (3) credits to meet graduation requirements, as prescribed by the V .1. Board of Education. These required classes are Physical Education I, Physical Education II, and Health.

Physical Education I:

Students are taught a continuation of skills necessary for the performance of a variety of physical activities. This builds on those skills acquired in Junior High and Elementary schools. Students learn to assess personal fitness status as related to cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and body composition, which will include basketball, volleyball, softball, football, and soccer.

Physical Education II :

Students value physical activity and its contribution to a healthful lifestyle, the prevention of some disease and the delay of the negative effects of aging. They learn the psychosocial implications and benefits from involvement in physical activities as a participant, spectator, coach, or official. Students examine their lifestyles, select goals, and make plans to achieve and maintain optimum health. This involves choosing behaviors that help prevent illness, diseases, and accidents. Emphasis is placed on promoting health for oneself and others, and to improve the quality of the environment.

First Aid :

Students examine their personal safety habits, and make plans to achieve and maintain optimum safety .This involves choosing behaviors that help prevent accidents, promote safety for oneself and others, and be prepared to respond in case of an emergency.

Adaptive Physical Education :

Prerequisite - Recommendation by teacher, counselor, or doctor.

Students with physical disabilities, which make it unsafe or uncomfortable to take part in regular physical education classes, are given the opportunity to learn all about sports and fitness activities.   Drawing and Painting I & II:

Recommended for students with more serious interest in art. Great emphasis shall be placed on acquisition of drawing techniques and skills. Content shall include study of composition in drawing, painting and design. Two-dimensional expressions in art history will be examined. This course also includes development of critical approach t painting in terms of color use: expressions, symbolism, emotional and aesthetic design, and spatial treatments. Materials include pencil, ink, and felt tip pens, oil base pastels, pastel chalk, tempera, acrylic and watercolor. This course requires research and reading about all aspects of drawing and painting. Advanced drawing and painting with such media as charcoal, graphite, oil paint acrylic, watercolor, tempra. Exhibition at various arts shows.

Art I :

Introduces students to art media and processes, the elements and principles of design, and art history. An intermediate level art class which covers the elements and principles of design in greater depth, involves students in a more disciplined study of art media and processes, challenges students with a more analytical investigation of art history and engages students in art activities the require a higher level of divergent thinking.

Dance is designed for the student interested in performing arts in the areas of ballet, modern, jazz, African, and choreography. Students will be tested in each area of content with both written and skills tests. A major solo performance is expected at the end of the course and weighs heavily on overall success in the class.

Other Programs

The Modified Instruction Program is for students who have had a psychological evaluation and is recommended by the appropriate diagnostic team. Modified instruction alters the instructional delivery by providing smaller group sizes. Instruction occurs in a self-contained special classroom setting, with opportunities, as appropriate, for academic mainstreaming. Instruction is geared towards the accomplishment of the goals and objectives that are stated on each student's Individual Educational Plan. The curriculum includes the same subject areas offered in the regular program.

The JROTC Program was established by the United States Congress in 1916 for the purpose of enhancing citizenship qualities of secondary school students throughout the United States and its territories. The law tasked each military service with the responsibility for organizing and supervising the program jointly with those high schools approved to host the program. The JROTC program prepares high school cadets for responsible leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens. The program is a stimulus for promoting graduation from high school and it provides instruction and rewarding opportunities, which will benefit the cadet, community, and nation.

Leadership Development (ROTC) I:

Students demonstrate knowledge of the rights, responsibilities (including respect for constituted authority), privilege and freedoms that underlie good citizenship. They also demonstrate proficiency in basic military skills (such as drill ceremonies, first aid, and map reading) that are necessary for working effectively as a member of a team.

Leadership Development (ROTC) II:

Students must display knowledge of the ethical values and principles that underlie good citizenship. They must express leadership potential, which shows the ability to live and work cooperative with others. Emphasis is placed on the importance of physical fitness in maintaining good health and appearance.

Leadership Development (ROTC) III:

Prerequisite -Leadership Development II

Students develop knowledge of the federal and military systems of justice. They must apply leadership assessment principles and display leadership potential by demonstrating the ability to effectively solve problems and supervise situations and subordinates. Students learn and experience the educational and social importance of technological advancements, as well as ethical problems associated with these advancements in areas such as energy, the environment, medicine and communications.

The Bilingual Program is for students who are- limited or non-proficient in the English language. Instructions are in the area of ESL, Biology, Algebra, Geometry, Virgin Islands and U.S. History, Physical Education, Auto Mechanics and other identified disciplines.

The major groupings of students (a) those migrating without minimal knowledge of the English language (b) recommended student's knowledge of the English language but comprehension of the content is inadequate (c) academic performance is low at any given time.

COMPUTER SCIENCE: Students must successfully complete one (1) credit to meet graduation requirements as prescribed by the V.I. Board of Education. These required classes are

Computer Science:

Grade level -10th -12th grade
Prerequisite -Credits in Algebra I and Data processing
Length -1 semester
Credits -1 credit

This course introduces students to the study of the personal computer, its components and its many uses. Students also learn keyboard operation, data processing, spreadsheet operations, and data base operations. Additionally students will learn algorithms and flow charts, basic computer languages and graphics on the computer.

Advanced Computer Science:

Grade Level - 11th or 12th
Prerequisite - Computer Science and Algebra II
Length - 1 semester
Credits - 1 credit

This course assumes that student has successfully completed computer science and Algebra II, and as such focuses on advanced mathematical applications. In Advanced Computer Science students will be writing formulas in Excel and Access that will assure the quick and correct calculations of any set of data.
